Why This Guide Exists
If you've researched laser hair removal, you've probably found a mix of outdated advice, scare-tactic articles, and vague "ask your provider" non-answers. We believe you deserve better.
At The Markham Spa, we've performed 5,000+ laser hair removal treatments for clients across Markham, Unionville, and the GTA. This guide covers exactly what our laser technicians tell first-time clients during consultations - no filler, no fluff.
Laser hair removal is one of the safest and most effective cosmetic procedures available. Modern diode lasers (which we use) work on all skin types, and most clients describe the sensation as "a warm snap" - far less painful than waxing.
How Laser Hair Removal Actually Works
Here's the science, simplified:
The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that's absorbed by melanin (pigment) in your hair follicle. This light energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle's ability to produce new hair - without affecting surrounding skin.
Why Multiple Sessions Are Required
At any given time, only 20β30% of your hair follicles are in the active growth phase (anagen)
The laser can only target active follicles - dormant ones are invisible to it
Each session catches a new batch of follicles as they cycle into the active phase
This is why treatments are spaced 4β6 weeks apart - timing them to catch new growth cycles
You'll notice significant reduction after just 2β3 sessions. By session 6β8, most clients see 85β95% permanent hair reduction. The remaining fine hairs are often so light and sparse they're barely noticeable.
Preparation Timeline
4 Weeks Before Your Session
Stop waxing, plucking, and threading immediately. The hair root must be intact for the laser to target it. Shaving is fine and actually recommended
Begin avoiding sun exposure. Tanned skin absorbs more laser energy, increasing sensitivity. Use SPF 30+ daily
Stop retinoids and chemical exfoliants (retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid). These make skin more photosensitive
1 Week Before
Perform a skin check. If you have active acne, cold sores, or open wounds in the treatment area, call us to reschedule. We want optimal conditions for your first session
Avoid blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, Advil) which can increase bruising risk
24 Hours Before
Shave the treatment area thoroughly. Short stubble allows laser energy to focus on the follicle, not surface hair
Skip all topical products - no lotions, deodorant, perfume, or sunscreen on the treatment area
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won't rub against treated skin afterward
For leg treatments, bring loose joggers or a maxi skirt. For underarms, a tank top with a loose cardigan works well. For bikini area, loose cotton underwear and relaxed-fit pants.
What Happens During Your First Session
Here's exactly what a first appointment at The Markham Spa looks like, minute by minute:
Step 1: Consultation (15 minutes)
Your laser technician reviews your medical history, assesses your skin type (Fitzpatrick scale IβVI), and evaluates your hair color and density. This determines exact laser settings for your skin-hair combination.
Step 2: Patch Test
For first-time clients, we perform a small test patch - usually 3β4 pulses - to confirm your skin responds well at the calibrated settings. We wait a few minutes to check for any adverse reaction.
Step 3: Treatment
Protective eyewear is provided. The laser handpiece glides over the skin with a built-in cooling tip that protects the epidermis and keeps you comfortable. You'll feel a warm snapping sensation - most clients say it's much more tolerable than they expected.
Step 4: Post-Care
A soothing aloe gel is applied. Your technician provides written aftercare instructions and schedules your next session.
Upper Lip: 5β10 min Β· Underarms: 10β15 min Β· Bikini Line: 15β20 min Β· Full Brazilian: 20β30 min Β· Half Legs: 30β40 min Β· Full Legs: 45β60 min Β· Full Back: 30β45 min
Aftercare - The First 48 Hours
This period is critical for optimal results and minimal side effects:
Mild redness is completely normal - it means the laser engaged the follicles effectively. It typically fades within 2β12 hours
Apply aloe vera or a fragrance-free moisturizer if the area feels warm. Avoid vitamin E creams for 48 hours
No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise for 24β48 hours. Heat + treated skin = irritation
No swimming in chlorinated or saltwater pools for 48 hours
Weeks 1β3 Post-Treatment
Hair shedding is expected. Between 7β21 days post-treatment, you'll notice treated hairs falling out. This is NOT regrowth - it's the damaged follicles releasing dead hair
Continue sun protection - SPF 30+ on exposed treated areas
Don't pick, scratch, or exfoliate aggressively. Let the shedding happen naturally
Shaving is fine between sessions if needed
